Homeschool Assistance Program Information

Homeschooling families are quite blessed in the state of Iowa.  Not only is a state with fewer regulations and restrictions placed on homeschooling, this area also has several homeschool assistance programs.  Learn more about them below!

What is a homeschool assistance program?
  • A Home School Assistance Program [HSAP] is a program a local public school district may offer to resident or open-enrolled homeschooled students.
  • School districts are not required to provide HSAPs and parents are not required to enroll their homeschooled students in a HSAP, if their district provides one.
  • The HSAPs that do exist across the state of Iowa vary widely as to how they operate and the services they offer, but, in general, all HSAPs provide a supervising teacher for HSAP-enrolled students.
  • Those school districts that offer Home School Assistance Programs receive state funding for each HSAP-enrolled student.
  • HSAPs are allowed to impose any additional requirements that they deem necessary upon students enrolled in their programs.

What are some of the benefits of being in a HSAP?
Many families enjoy the opportunities provided by an HSAP, including field trips and enrichment classes. Many of them also have a library where you can check out materials. A great way to learn the pros and cons of a certain area HSAP would be to simply ask parents who are involved in the Facebook groups!

When can I get involved in an HSAP?
Open enrollment in the state of Iowa is March 1st for students entering grades 1-12. The deadline for students starting kindergarten is September 1st. There are exemptions for this deadline (i.e. moving into a new district - read full list here). You may not always want to wait until the deadline for instance with Marion HSAP, enrichment class registration is early June and classes fill up quickly.
